Pilates is a system for mind-body conditioning that helps build flexibility, muscle strength, and endurance in the legs, abdominals, arms, hips, back, and whole-body! A strong emphasis is placed on improving posture, spinal and pelvic alignment, breathing, and developing a strong core or center to improve coordination, balance, and body control while developing healthy movement habits that keep the body fit, flexible, and injury-free.

The History of Pilates

Developed in the early 1920’s, by Joseph H. Pilates and originally called “Contrology,” Pilates exercises focus on postural symmetry. Instead of isolating muscle groups, the whole body is trained, integrating the upper and lower extremities with the torso.

This system utilized a variety of specialized apparatus designed by Mr. Pilates. (the Reformer, Trapeze Table, Wunda Chair, Electric Chair, Pedi-Pole, Spine Corrector, Foot Corrector, Small Barrels, and more…) All equipment is spring-based, which provides work for the muscles in both directions (eccentric and concentric contractions) to build a longer, leaner physique, and create balanced muscle development. By utilizing the Pilates equipment for training, the body is placed in a non-weight bearing position taking pressure off the joints while re-training efficient movement patterns for better health.

In addition to the Pilates Equipment, there is also a series of Matwork exercises that require no additional equipment. Pilates Matwork is the most challenging part of the Method, because the only thing supporting correct and efficient movement is how well YOUR mind and muscles work to control the body and do the exercises. There are over 500 “traditional” exercises in the Pilates system, and hundreds and thousands of modifications, and variations.

Making the Most of Pilates

The Pilates system has been used for rehabilitation, general health improvement, and improved sports performance for professional athletes. Every exercise can be modified in range of difficulty from beginner to advanced. Intensity can be increased over time as health and functional movement habits improve and the body adapts to the exercises.

There are 8 Principles of Movement for Pilates as identified by the Pilates Method Alliance from Joseph Pilates book, Return to Life Through Contrology.

  • Whole Body Movement
  • Breathing
  • Balanced Muscle Development
  • Control
  • Concentration
  • Centering
  • Rhythm, or Flow
  • Precision
